In 1954, the government of Guangxi province shut down over a dozen private tea merchants and implemented a unified system for acquiring Maocha, centralizing the production of Liu Bao tea in just two factories: the Wuzhou Factory and the Hengxian Factory. From that point on, Liu Bao tea shifted from a long-standing artisanal craft to modern, large-scale industrial manufacturing. It was also during this period that the most significant technological breakthrough in modern Liu Bao tea history emerged in 1958: the invention of the Wodui method (artificial wet-piling fermentation), marking the beginning of a new era for this historical tea. However, this shift caused the production of traditional Liu Bao to break off for decades, resulting in the current market’s extreme rarity of well-aged traditional Liu Bao tea.
This 2004 farmer-style Liu Bao, also known as raw Liu Bao, is produced using traditional methods without the wet-piling fermentation process, and is also impeccably aged. Unlike modern Liu Bao, raw Liu Bao requires long-term aging to mellow its strong taste and develop mature flavors. This tea slumbered in the storage of a private collector for nearly two decades, undergoing a profound transformation from a once-harsh brew into a mellow cup, with its reddish-brown liquor color similar to that of modern Liu Bao, yet with flavors far more complex.
It offers a strong and distinct aged aroma, pleasantly reminiscent of an old wooden cabinet. Once awakened by boiling water, more intricate notes unfold: cooked sticky rice, betel nut, camphor, and most uniquely, a subtle hint of pine smoke - a rare feature in Liu Bao tea. Thanks to the nature of farmer-style Liu Bao, the unfermented raw materials allow more room for flavor development during aging, resulting in a rich, layered profile and a thick texture that sustains countless infusions.
