Same as Shui Xian, Mei Zhan is one of the few Yancha varietals that are sometimes left unpruned and allowed to grow into tall trees. Corresponding to Lao Cong Shui Xian, the old tall Mei Zhan trees are called Lao Shu Mei Zhan. The minimum age to be considered Lao Shu Mei Zhan is not fixed, as some Mei Zhan plantations have never been pruned from the start, while others were allowed to grow after a period of pruning only when their excellence was noted. However, there is no case of a Lao Shu Mei Zhan being less than 30 years old.
Being old trees, Lao Shu Mei Zhan offers smoother flavors compared to ordinary Mei Zhan, but the distinctive plum notes of the varietal are more pronounced. During its production, to preserve these characteristics, it is also usually roasted relatively lighter, resulting in an even smoother flavor profile. You will notice the difference when comparing it to our ordinary Mei Zhan (2023 new version available). This is a well-fruited tea, with both ripe and green fruit notes, especially plums, present in both aroma and taste. Also, the sweetness and floral notes that define a good Yancha are present and rich in it. If you are someone who does not prefer charcoal notes, this will be your perfect tea.
